Teaching opportunity: English Teaching in Kangding, Sichuan Province

The Bridge Fund English Teaching Position 2007-2008
Position title:
English Teacher at Kangding Teacher's College.
Location:
China - Kangding, Sichuan Province.
Starting Date of Jobs: September 1, 2007
Duties:
- Up to 12 hours of contact English teaching per week with beginner students
age 14-18
- Occasional remedial coaching and extra-curricular activities
Qualifications:
- Minimum BA and TESL qualification or comparable experience
- 2 or more years TESL experience
- Experience teaching beginners preferred
- Ability to live and work independently in a multicultural environment
- China experience preferred
- Teacher training experience preferred
-Native English Speaker only
Summary:
Rewarding opportunities to teach motivated young Tibetans at the high
school level. Self-reliant, committed, professional teachers are needed
for three-year programs with high standards.
Other Information:
Teachers will provide intensive instruction to classes of 30 students from
local Tibetan areas. Tibetan students aged 14-16 are selected through a
careful screening process - they are bright, exceptionally motivated, and
expect to make rapid progress. Students will progress from beginner to
intermediate level in 3 years of intensive study. Classes are based
around the Junior & Senior English for China textbooks but supplementary
materials and activities are expected. The jobs involve teaching
phonetics, reading, writing, conversation, and listening, and for
students in their third year of study, teaching methodology.
Candidates must be able to plan and run classes independently and develop
curriculum, where necessary. The ability to deal independently with
day-to-day life in China is also necessary. The posts are in semi-urban
towns located in rural areas (1 day drive to closest major city).
Location description:
Kangding is the capital of Ganzi, a larger than Nepal-sized
administrative area in Sichuan Province that is adjacent to the Tibet
Autonomous Region, Qinghai Province, and Yunnan Province. There are 3
Tibetan monasteries in the town, and the population is a diverse mix of
Han, Tibetans, and other ethnic peoples from Sichuan and Yunnan
Provinces. Kangding Teachers College is located in Gutsa township, 30 km
from Kangding.
Successful candidates will be among a small number of foreigners permitted to
reside in this location. Out of respect for local customs and sensitivities,
they will be expected not to conduct or participate in political or religious
missionary activities of any kind.
Pay and Benefits:
- USD 8,000-10,000 per annum, depending on qualifications and experience
- Furnished apartment on campus
- International health insurance including emergency medevac
Comfortable apartment equipped with kitchen, laundry machine, bathroom and
internet connection will be available. Local food prices are inexpensive and
local restaurants serve Chinese, Tibetan, and Muslim food.
All positions are for 1 year with possible extension.
