Are you considering only nationwide guides? Please consider the Federal Writers' Project American Guide series of state and county books, published in the late 1930s and early 1940s. For a project on the New Deal in Ohio, I have found 20+ guides, with several more in manuscript, written by the FWP in the state. Many of these guides are in local history collections in public libraries. Cleveland Public Library maintains a travel guide collection--a quick ClevNet search brings up over 1000 titles for the US alone. A sniffy aside: For this baseball fan, I cannot help but think that the excellent former Cleveland players now playing in the World Series may have consulted CPL's collection during their trades. Maybe next year. Good luck!
