Teachers, feel free to publicize to interested students! *"The Character of 19-century Black Preachers"* A Lecture by Dr. Paul A. Minifee, Professor of Rhetoric and Writing Studies, San Diego State University Saturday, November 14, 2009 2:30 p.m. Christ United Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall 1845 30^th St (at Fir) San Diego, CA 92102 * * Join us for a presentation by Dr. Paul A. Minifee on the rhetoric and activism of nineteenth-century African American preachers. Using Rev. Jermain W. Loguen, and Jarena Lee as examples, Dr. Minifee focuses on their “call,” how each perceived the dual roles of preacher and politician, and the “response,” how each used his/her life to “walk the talk.” His work shows that their speeches, letters, and narratives were not “empty rhetoric” but vital historical and religious texts. Dr. Minifee holds a Ph.D. in Rhetoric and Writing from the University of Texas at Austin. His teaching and research interests include the rhetoric of abolitionists, slave narratives, spiritual autobiographies, black church history, black preaching, homiletics, biblical hermeneutics, black women’s rhetoric, black manhood, blaxploitation films, and therapeutic writing. Dr. Minifee also serves as the Faculty in Residence at Zura Hall on campus. There will be time for discussion and light refreshments will be served.
