What: The 40th Anniversary Black 14 Panel Discussion Who: Association of Black Student Leaders (ABSL) When: Tuesday, November 3rd from 12-2pm Where: Skylight Lounge in the University of Wyoming’s Student Union (1000 E. University Ave., Laramie, WY, 82071) ABSL (in association with African American and Diaspora Studies, Multicultural Affairs, and ASUW) will be hosting a 40th Anniversary Black 14 Panel Discussion on Tuesday, November 3rd from 12-2pm in the Skylight Lounge. The Black 14 are the fourteen Black football players who, in 1969, were kicked off the University of Wyoming's football team for wanting to wear Black armbands during the game against BYU to protest the Mormon Church’s racist policies (i.e. not allowing Black men into the ministry). This panel will celebrate and commemorate these fourteen Black men who made history through their student activism. The panelists will include: Mel Hamilton (one of the Black 14 players); John Griffin (one of the Black 14 players); Clinton Isaac, Jr. (brother of Jim Isaac- one of the Black 14 players); Charles Graves (the lawyer for the Black 14 players); Ryan Thorburn (author of the new book entitled Black 14: The Rise, Fall and Rebirth of Wyoming Football); Kevin McKinney (presently from UW Athletics and a student at the time of the Black 14); and Paulette Gadlin (a former UW student who helped organize the protest). Food will be provided by Jimmy John's. Black 14 t-shirts and books will be available for purchase.
