Famed photographer Roy DeCarava died last night. He is a big loss to me and I am sure to many others. His book, "The Sweet Flypaper of Life," co-authored with Langston Hughes, was published in 1955. That book is what influenced me to become a photographer. It was and still is my Bible. I find it ironic that the first time I saw the book was in the home of his now wife Sherry Turner DeCarava. I would go by her home and ring the bell and Mrs. Turner would say the girls are not home Bobby. I would answer, that's OK, can I come in and see that photography book? That was in 1956. Roy was a personal friend, a mentor, a brilliant artist and one who always stayed true to his art. I can never forget him and what he did for me as a photographic artist. www.sengstackeimages.com
