award to Burnham Date: Tue, 30 Apr 2013 01:24:28 +0000 From: Mbogoni, Lawrence <Mbogonil@wpunj.edu> To: H-NET List for African History and Culture <H-AFRICA@H-NET.MSU.EDU> Dear List Mmembers, I am very glad that the powers that be in the ANC administration have seen it fit to defer the confering of the OT award to the late Guyanese Predsident Burnham. I am an alumni of the University of Dar-es-Salaam and barely missed being a student of Dr. Rodney. He left the University of Dar-es-Salaam 2 yaers before I enrolled as an undergrad. When Dr. Rodney was assassinated I was then a junior member of the History Department. We held an emotional memorial on campus which was organized by the late Dr. Bonaventure Swai, then the chair of the History Department. Although Dr. Rodney never taught me I had the oppotrtunity to meet and hear him speak on campus as well as debate with Dr. Ali Mazrui before his assassination. Dr. Rodney was not only an eloquent speaker but an ardent spokesman and proponent of the interests of African people and people of African descent in the Diaspora. His legacy and memory is one that cannot in any way be compared to that of his nemesis, the late President Burnham, the man resposnsible for his demise. Again, I am glad that the powers that be in the ANC have come to their senses and deferred the conferring of the Oliver Tambo award on the man responsible for the murder on one of Africa's sons of revered memory. Sincerely, Lawrence Mbogoni, PhD Associate Professor Africana-World Studies Department William Paterson University of New Jersey ________________________________________ From: H-NET List for African History and Culture [H-AFRICA@H-NET.MSU.EDU] on behalf of teferi abate [teferiabate@MAIL.H-NET.MSU.EDU] Sent: Monday, April 29, 2013 6:38 PM To: H-AFRICA@H-NET.MSU.EDU Subject: DISCUSSION: Walter Rodney assassination vs. S.African award to Burnham Subject: DISCUSSION: Walter Rodney assassination vs. S.African award to Burnham Date: Mon, 29 Apr 2013 10:31:11 -0400 From: Peter Limb <firstname.lastname@example.org> Reply-To: email@example.com To: h-saf <H-SAFRICA@H-NET.MSU.EDU> CC: firstname.lastname@example.org From: Peter Limb It just goes to show that sometimes prompt, coordinated action can make small indents, with the issue taken up by some within the ANC and now the government decision to posthumously grant the Oliver Tambo award to Forbes Burnham was today deferred. http://www.guyanagraphic.com/government-politics/government-south-africa-has-defered-posthumous-awarding-president-forbes-burnham http://www.politicsweb.co.za/politicsweb/view/politicsweb/en/page71619?oid=372693&sn=Detail&pid=71619 -- -- -- --
