Dear colleagues, I would like to put together a panel of papers that broadly examines foreign aid (public and private) in the 1960s and 1970s in sub-Saharan Africa. Any topics related to this theme would be welcome on any part of the continent. My presentation will explore the impact of Mobutu Sese Seko's regime and cultural authenticity on US private religious aid and development programs from 1966 to 1972, as well as the negotiations between Congolese church leaders with foreign Protestant church aid organizations. I'll consider abstracts from graduate students and independent scholars as well as professors like myself. Please email me off list.
