Constanze Weise coweise@gmail.com Thursday, January 17, 2013 Seeking a good article on ancient Africa: Reply Hi Irene, Here are some suggestions for background readings on ancient and medieval West African history. I have used them all in various surveys on early African History (some as required and some as suggested readings) and they were well received by the undergraduate students I taught. Connah, Graham. "Holocene Africa." In *The Human Past: World Prehistory & the Development of Human Societies*, edited by Christopher Scarre, 350-391. London: Thames & Hudson, 2005. Great survey of important relevant themes of African History from antiquity to 1600 AD Connah, Graham.* Forgotten Africa: An Introduction to its Archaeology*. London; New York: Routledge, 2004. Good, short and readable chapters on all aspects of ancient and medieval Africa. *For the western Sudan and Mande History see for instance:* Conrad, David. "Oral Tradition & Perceptions of History from the Manding Peoples of West Africa." In *Themes in West Africa's History*, edited by Emmanuel Kwaku Akyeampong, Athens; Oxford, England; Accra: Ohio University; James Currey; Woeli Pub. Services, 2006, 73-96. Levtzion, Nehemia. "The Early States of the Western Sudan." In *History of West Africa*, edited by J. F. Ade Ajayi and Michael Crowder, Burnt Mill, Harlow, Essex, England: Longmann, 1985, 129-167. Austen, Ralph A.* In Search of Sunjata: The Mande Oral Epic as History, Literature, and Performance*. Bloomington: Indiana University Press, 1999. There are many good and readable chapters in the General History of Africa (now online free downloadable), which are despite the publication date still very relevant. Niane, Djibril Tamsir and Unesco. General History of Africa.* Africa from the Twelfth to the Sixteenth Century*. London; Berkeley, Calif.: Heinemann; University of California Press, 1984. http://www.unesco.org/new/en/culture/themes/dialogue/general-and-regional-histories/general-history-of-africa/volumes/complete-edition/volume-iv-africa-from-the-twelfth-to-the-sixteenth-century/#c181023 Constanze Weise Visiting Instructor of African History, Dickinson College On Thu, Jan 17, 2013 at 2:06 PM, Lorna Zukas <llueker@nu.edu> wrote: > Irene d'Almeida > idalmeida@yahoo.com > Thursday, January 17, 2013 > > SEEKING A GOOD ARTICLE ON ANCIENT AFRICA > > Dear colleagues, I am looking for a good article on Ancient Africa for an > undergraduate survey course on Africa.
