Her books are an invaluable source for the social and political lives of the South African Left in the 20th century. Especially _The Rift_, for an account of South Africans in exile from the 1950s on, which includes interviews with some 300 of them, a sort of Soth African "diasphora" in reverse. The books about the Rivonia trial and _The World That was Ours_ are also wonderful portrayals of that period. And the fictional account of torture and repression during the apartheid era (_Death Is Part of the Process_) is a very accomplished thriller as well as a revelation of the human rights abuses at that time.
