From: Sonja Diallo <ared@enda.sn> Death of Yero Doro Diallo I have the unhappy task of announcing the death of Yero Doro Diallo on Sunday, March 5th, 2006. Yero was known for his dedication to promoting literacy, books and education in African languages, especially in his own first language, Pulaar. He was a prolific author in Pulaar. While studying in Cairo in the 60's and 70's, he published several books in Pulaar, helped set up literacy classes in that language, and animated a radio broadcast in Pulaar which covered all of West Africa. Upon his return to Senegal in 1982, he became the person responsible for promoting literacy classes within the Association for the Renaissance of Pulaar, a Senegalese association which had been created in 1957 and which took literacy in that language as their major focus in 1982. Since 1982, Yero travelled constantly across Senegal, urging individuals to invest in local language literacy classes. He was a founding member of the Groupe d'Initiative des Livres en Langues Nationales in 1988, of Associates in Research and Education for Development in 1991, and of the Centre d'Etudes, de Recherche, et de Formation en Langues Africaines in 1998. He was president of the Association for the Renaissance of Pulaar until his death, having been fundamental in the creation of the ARP-Tabital Pulaagu in Senegal. Since 1990, he has published 11 original books in Pulaar, and worked with the Groupe d'Ecrivains et de Traducteurs des Oeuvres Culturelles et Religieuses en Langues Africaines to publish 4 books on Islam in Pulaar. -- Dr. Sonja Fagerberg-Diallo Director, ARED BP 10 737 Dakar - Liberté Senegal tel: 221 825 71 19, 824 5098 fax: 221 824 70 97
