Obituary: Boye Agunbiade
Dr. Boye Agunbiade is dead. Early reports suggest he died from complications
of stroke. He had suffered a stroke last year in Nigeria from which he seemed
fully recovered.
A scholar in regional economics and development geography by training and
temperament, Boye Agunbiade followed his undergraduate degree from Ibadan with
a Ph.D. from the University of Iowa. He was recently retired from NISER, The
Nigerian Institute of Social and Economic Research.
Boye Agunbiade hailed from Fiditi ("Home of the Fruits") in Afijio Local
Government, Oyo State, Nigeria. His scholarship in regional development was
formally manifested in research he conducted while at NISER; informally it
manifested itself through his lifelong dedication to the development of his
hometown. His undergraduate thesis focused on Fiditi, and he was still
documenting its progress decades later in his article in _Hometown
associations: indigenous knowledge and development in Nigeria_ (ed. Rex Honey
and Stanley Okafor).
Ajiboye Onaolapo Agunbiade, "Boye" to his friends and colleagues, carried with
him to the end of his days the affectionate nickname "Chairman Mao." It was a
token of his student politics days at the University of Ibadan, including a
term as student president.
Dr Agunbiade is survived by a wife and children. May his soul rest in perfect
peace (amen, amen).
