<firstname.lastname@example.org> Basel Namibia Studies Series has just published volume No 6 William Heuva Media and Resistance Politics The Alternative Press in Namibia, 1960-1990 Introduction by Andre du Pisani Basel (P.Schlettwein Publishing), 2001, 166p., ill., index ISBN 3 908193 10 9 This is the first study to analyse the history of the alternative press in Namibia. William Heuva traces the emergence and aims of Namibian anti-apartheid publications, such as the community and grassroots press, the nationalist press, the church press, and the progressive independent press, before the country's independence from South Africa in 1990. Most of these publications were alternative in character, operation, distribution and objectives to the mainstream colonial press. They targeted an oppositional readership and provided alternative symbols and means of communication for subjugated people.
