Columbia University <gm522@COLUMBIA.EDU> It seems to me important to emphasize that the holdings of the ANS are _unique_ holdings, and that they do not exist in their entirety on microfilm in France. There's quite a little library tucked into the basement of le Building, and it's a shame when historians coming from the US and writing about West Africa--or at least French colonialism in West Africa--limit themselves to the collections in France itself because they think that there is no need to go to Senegal and benefit from the holdings there and the valuable knowledge of Saliou Mbaye and M. N'Diaye. M. Mbaye has compiled an indispensable guide to the Dakar archives.
