Syracuse University <MWelling@maxwell.syr.edu> Neandertals are hominids, but there is an increasing tendency among palaeoanthropologists to exclude them from the human line, notwithstanding heated arguments by Wolpoff and others. This is partly on the basis of DNA studies (e.g. Krings, M. et al. 1997 "Neandertal DNA sequences and the Origins of Modern Humans" _Cell_ 90, pp. 19-30.
