(Sent on behalf of George Joseph, ALA Headquarters) For further information feel free to contact Miki Flockemann (Robmiki@mweb.co.za ; 0822023241 or 0214483882) Dear Friends, Fatima Dike, South Africa's foremost black woman playwright, recently experienced a severe setback when her Langa home was ravaged by fire on 23rd Sept. Part of the house has been reduced to a shell, and the section that was not burnt has had smoke and water damage. Unfortunately she was not insured, and the cost of basic rebuilding to make the house habitable is at least R40,000. Fatima Dike has played a vital role in the South African theatre scene since the days of the Space theatre in the 1970s. Her first published play was The Sacrifice at Kreli (1978), while the most recent The Return, had a successful run at this year's Grahamstown Festival, and has just come back from the Black Theatre Festival in North Carolina, where Dike also received a Life-Long Achievement Award. But rewards for artists are generally of a symbolic, rather than material order, which is why it is only fitting to approach theatre lovers and friends of Fatts (as she is affectionally known) for support at this time of crisis when her needs are urgent. Her own contribution to our cultural landscape has been enormous, and the sooner she is able to continue engaging as writer, mentor, theatre practitioner and teacher, the better for us all. A transmission account has been opened at FNB to assist her in rebuilding her home. Donations can be made directly into this account, the Dike Rebuild Fund (Details below). We are mindful of the current economic climate, so any donation, no matter how modest, is welcome. You may choose to donate anonymously, or contact Fatima Dike yourself (07644998896). Signatories who support this request include representatives from Cape Town's major theatre institutions and companies, as well as prominent theatre practitioners, namely: Roy Sargeant (Artscape Theatre); Mannie Manim (Baxter Theatre); Mark Fleishman and Jennie Reznek (Magnet Theatre Company); Bo Petersen, Janice Honeyman and Mike Van Graan.
