I am proposing a panel for the conference, "Student Activism, Southern Style: Organizing and Protest in the 1960s and 70s," to be held at the University of South Carolina March 19-21, 2010. The panel will be titled something like "The Campus and Beyond: New Directions in the History of Southern Student Activism." The focus will be on investigating how students engaged with broader issues and movements beyond the boundaries of the campus. My paper will be on the SDS chapter at the University of Houston and how they volunteered as local community organizers in the War on Poverty in Houston. The second paper will focus on the radical activist Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz, whose identity as a southerner shaped her activism beyond the university campus. And we have a chair/commentator. I am searching for a 3rd paper presenter to join us on this panel. Please respond to me directly at wesleyphelps@rice.edu if your work looks at southern student activism in the 60s and 70s, particularly if the activism extends beyond the boundaries of the campus.
