This message will have a tone of frustration. Here is the press release for the Family Online Safety Institute conference that I am not attending because of the altercation I got into because I oppose legislation to provide funding to Internet safety organizations to teach about internet dangers. http://news.cnet.com/8301-19518_3-10388202-238.html Note what Stephen Balkam says: The theme of this year's conference, "Building a Culture of Responsibility: From Online Safety to Digital Citizenship," reflects a significant change in the thinking of many online safety experts. "Of course we need to teach basic safety skills," said FOSI CEO Stephen Balkam, "but we need to move to the next stage which includes digital citizenship and responsibility." Damn right! This is what I said to the COPA Commission - that Stephen was the chair of in 2000! Then note that Senator Menendez is presenting. So far his bill is off-base. Do you really want DOJ to be providing funding to create curriculum addressing digital citizenship and responsibility? And what about the concerns of the minority of young people who are at greater risk online? And note the new presentation Online Safety 3.0. http://www.connectsafely.org/Commentaries-Staff/online-safety-30-empowering- and-protecting-youth.html New ideas. NOT. The same ideas I presented in 2000. But I am persona non grata with these folks because I oppose funding that will perpetrate the same size fear-based messages for all young people and NOT specifically address the concerns of young people who are truly at risk. AND because I do not think the federal government has any business controlling the creation of curriculum and provision of professional development. Nancy -- Nancy Willard, M.S., J.D.
